Justice in the Land

 Very interestingly, the Ramban makes a clear distinction between the Land of Israel, and lands and states outside of Israel. 

Whereas within the confines of Israel, every city is required to establish a court of justice, that is not the case in lands and states outside of Israel. 

Rather, outside of Israel, each and every district - or province - must establish a court of law. This more minimal requirement, essentially, reflects a difference in the primacy of establish justice in Israel as opposed to outside of its sanctified bounds. 

Israel is the epicenter of Hashem's will in this world, Torah radiating from Zion. The mark of Torah is justice, it being one of the three pillars ensuring the subsistence of this world (Pirkei Avot). Therefore, it would seem, that justice, law, and the truth of God's will in this world, must be reinforced, and be ever-present in the land of Israel, not sought, but ubiquitous, available in each and every city.

Can Moshe Have Misheard God?

Sometimes we hear something, but we don't really hear what has been said. Or, we understand a message differently from how it was intended. That was what happened in this past week's parsha, Shemini, when Moshe's wrath flared against Aharon's sons, Elazar and Itamar for not eating the he-goat of their sin offering. He chastised them. "Hashem gave it to you to procure forgiveness for the community's sin and to atone on their behalf before Hashem. Its blood was not brought into the sanctuary within; it should have been eaten in the holy domain as I had commanded." What if God Was One of Us

The answer is, it would be pretty darn bad.  This week's parsha speaks to four different situations where one accidentally sins, and the consequent atonement process.  On Shabbat, a friend asked me, "Why does the verse  say, ' When a chieftain (i.e. leader) sins, unwittingly bearing guilt by performing an act Hashem has commanded him not to do (Vayikra 4:22)..?'
